(12 may. 1803, Darmstadt, Hesse-Darmstadt–18 abr. 1873, Munich, Baviera).
Químico alemán. Hizo muchas contribuciones importantes a la sistematización de la química orgánica en sus primeras etapas, a la bioquímica, a la educación en química y a la química agrícola. Fue el primero en demostrar la existencia de los radicales libres y avanzó mucho en aclarar las propiedades de los ácidos. Desarrolló métodos analíticos simples (
ver análisis) que en gran medida ayudaron en su trabajo, analizó muchos tejidos y fluidos corporales y demostró que las plantas utilizan dióxido de carbono, agua y amoníaco. Con los años su reputación se hizo tan grande que era considerado como la autoridad definitiva en cuestiones de química y con frecuencia estuvo involucrado en controversias científicas.
